A beautifully aromatic wine from one of the Rhône Valley’s most distinctive appellations

When we talk about the southern Rhône, we often think of red wines.

But the region has another identity, one that is older, sweeter and incredibly aromatic.

Muscat Beaumes-de-Venise is one of the Rhône Valley’s great sweet wines, made entirely from a grape that seems almost designed for the job: Muscat à petits grains.

The 2025 vintage from Domaine de Cassan is a wonderfully expressive example.

One grape, unmistakable character

Muscat à petits grains is one of those grape varieties that is almost impossible to mistake.

Its aromas are naturally intense, with notes of white flowers, ripe grapes, citrus and exotic fruit, sometimes accompanied by delicate hints of honey and spice.

Unlike many sweet wines, its character does not come simply from residual sugar.

The grape itself is naturally aromatic.

That is what gives Muscat Beaumes-de-Venise its distinctive personality: it can be sweet and generous without feeling anonymous or heavy.

A wine born in the Dentelles de Montmirail

Domaine de Cassan sits in the spectacular landscape of the Dentelles de Montmirail, where vineyards are surrounded by limestone peaks, rocky slopes and Mediterranean vegetation.

It is a beautiful setting, but more importantly, it is a remarkable environment for vines.

The Mediterranean climate brings warmth and sunshine, while the surrounding landscape and altitude help preserve freshness.

For a sweet wine, that balance is essential.

Sugar alone can make a wine feel heavy.

Freshness makes it lively.

And Muscat Beaumes-de-Venise needs both.

A family estate with a new chapter

The story of Domaine de Cassan began in the 1970s under the Croset family.

For many years, the estate was worked by the two sons of Paul Croset, who had founded the domaine.

Today, the estate has entered a new chapter under the Petitjean family, who had already been closely connected with the Croset family for many years.

Their relationship began well before the acquisition of Cassan.

In 2010, the Petitjean family took over several of the estate’s vineyards, including plots in Gigondas and Beaumes-de-Venise. Those vineyards were subsequently converted to organic farming by the team at Château La Croix des Pins.

The philosophy today remains deeply connected to the land.

Sweet, but never heavy

The beauty of a good Muscat Beaumes-de-Venise lies in its balance.

The sweetness is immediately appealing, but the aromatic freshness of Muscat keeps the wine vibrant.

The 2025 vintage is intensely perfumed, with the unmistakable fragrance of fresh grapes, white flowers and ripe fruit.

On the palate, it is generous and smooth, but lifted by freshness that keeps the finish bright and inviting.

It is indulgent without becoming tiring.

And that makes it remarkably versatile.

More than a dessert wine

Of course, Muscat Beaumes-de-Venise is wonderful with dessert.

But stopping there would be a mistake.

Its aromatic intensity makes it a fascinating partner for blue cheeses, foie gras, fruit-based desserts and dishes with a little spice.

And sometimes, the best way to enjoy it is simply on its own, well chilled, when you want a small glass of something generous and beautifully fragrant.

Why we love it at The French Paradox

Sweet wines sometimes get overlooked.

Perhaps because we don’t always know when to drink them.

But wines like this are a reminder that sweetness can be incredibly sophisticated when it is balanced by freshness, terroir and aromatic complexity.

The Domaine de Cassan Muscat Beaumes-de-Venise 2025 is a beautiful expression of a grape, a village and a landscape that deserve to be better known.

A little sweetness from the Dentelles de Montmirail—and a very different side of the Rhône Valley.
