A pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley

Some wines don’t need to be complicated to be memorable.

A great Sauvignon Blanc is all about balance: freshness, purity, aromatic intensity, and the ability to express where it comes from. The Domaine Charbonnier Sauvignon Blanc Vieilles Vignes 2022, from the Touraine appellation, is a beautiful example of this style — a crisp, dry white wine that combines the natural energy of Sauvignon Blanc with the richness that comes from older vines and careful winemaking.

Touraine – the Loire Valley’s diverse wine region

Located in the heart of the Loire Valley, Touraine is a region of incredible diversity.

Often associated with historic towns, castles, and the winding Loire River, it is also home to a wide variety of vineyards. The area is particularly known for fresh, expressive white wines, where grape varieties like Sauvignon Blanc reveal a strong connection to the local soils and climate.

Compared with more famous Sauvignon Blanc appellations such as Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé, Touraine offers a different perspective: often more accessible, but still capable of producing wines with great character and personality.

Domaine Charbonnier – respecting the vineyard

Domaine Charbonnier works with a thoughtful approach to the vineyard, focusing on preserving the natural balance of the vines.

This cuvée comes from Vieilles Vignes (old vines), a detail that matters. Older vines generally produce lower yields and naturally more concentrated grapes, bringing extra depth and complexity to the final wine.

The vineyard is managed through reasoned agriculture, with careful attention to vine health, including grass cover between rows, leaf removal, and precise pruning methods.

The result is a wine where freshness and concentration come together.

Sauvignon Blanc and the Touraine expression

Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, this wine showcases everything that makes the grape so popular.

Sauvignon Blanc is known for its bright acidity and expressive aromas. Depending on where it grows, it can show different personalities — from citrus and mineral notes to tropical fruit and floral aromas.

Here, the soils play an important role.

The vineyard is planted on a combination of:

  • clay
  • flint (silex)
  • clay-rich silt

The presence of flint is particularly interesting, as it is often associated with wines that have a fresh mineral character and a distinct sense of place.

Careful winemaking for freshness and texture

The grapes are harvested mechanically before being gently pressed.

After clarification, the juice undergoes a cold stabilisation period to preserve the purity of the aromas. Fermentation takes place at low temperatures to maintain freshness, followed by ageing on fine lees with regular stirring (bâtonnage) until January.

This ageing process adds an extra dimension to the wine: not just freshness, but also a smoother texture and more complexity on the palate.

In the glass – bright, aromatic, and balanced

The 2022 vintage shows a beautiful pale golden colour.

The nose is immediately expressive, with aromas of ripe exotic fruits alongside fresher notes that bring balance and energy.

On the palate, the wine combines richness and freshness. The fruit feels generous, but the lively acidity keeps everything precise and refreshing.

It is a Sauvignon Blanc that avoids being simple — there is a real harmony between aromatic intensity, texture, and freshness.

A versatile wine for the table

This is the kind of white wine that naturally finds its place at the table.

Perfect as an aperitif, it also pairs beautifully with seafood, fish in sauce, light summer dishes, and one of the Loire Valley’s great traditions: goat cheese.

The natural freshness of Sauvignon Blanc creates the perfect match with the creamy texture and character of chèvre.

A reminder that great Sauvignon Blanc comes in many forms

While Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé often receive the spotlight, Touraine continues to produce remarkable Sauvignon Blanc wines with their own identity.

The Domaine Charbonnier Vieilles Vignes 2022 is a perfect example: fresh, expressive, elegant, and deeply connected to its Loire Valley origins.

A wine that proves simplicity, when done well, can be one of the greatest qualities a bottle can have.
