A refined Pinot Noir that proves the Loire is much more than Sauvignon Blanc

When people think of the Loire Valley, they usually picture crisp Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre or elegant Chenin Blanc from Vouvray.

But the Loire has another story to tell.

From the gentle hills that follow the River Cher comes a style of Pinot Noir that is fresh, elegant, and wonderfully food-friendly. Less famous than Burgundy, perhaps, but with its own personality and charm.

The IGP Val de Loire Pinot Noir from Domaine Charbonnier is a beautiful introduction to this often-overlooked expression of the grape.

The Loire Valley – more than just white wines

Stretching for over a thousand kilometres across France, the Loire Valley is one of the country’s most diverse wine regions.

Its cool climate makes it ideal for aromatic white varieties, but it is equally well suited to delicate red grapes such as Pinot Noir.

Rather than producing wines of great power, the Loire tends to create reds defined by freshness, bright fruit, and elegance—wines that are made to accompany food rather than overwhelm it.

It is a style that rewards subtlety.

Domaine Charbonnier – a family estate in the heart of the Loire

Nestled on the hillsides overlooking the River Cher, in the heart of the Loire’s famous château country, Domaine Charbonnier is a family estate where tradition and modern know-how go hand in hand.

Since 2009, brothers Michel and Stéphane Charbonnier have continued the work of the family after taking over from Daniel. Michel devotes his attention to the vineyards, while Stéphane oversees the cellar and the development of the wines.

Together, they farm around 22 hectares of vines, carefully balancing traditional vineyard practices with modern techniques to produce wines that consistently earn recognition in national competitions and French wine guides.

Pinot Noir beyond Burgundy

Although Pinot Noir is inseparable from Burgundy, the grape has found another home in the Loire Valley.

The cooler climate allows it to ripen gently, producing wines with vibrant fruit, soft tannins, and remarkable freshness.

Rather than seeking concentration, Loire Pinot Noir celebrates balance.

It is a style that captures red fruit, floral notes, and delicate spice while remaining light on its feet.

Clay and flint – a Loire terroir

The vineyards for this cuvée grow on clay and flint soils, a classic combination found throughout parts of the Loire.

Clay provides structure and depth, while flint contributes freshness and a subtle mineral edge that gives the wine extra precision.

The estate follows a reasoned approach to viticulture, carefully managing the vineyard to preserve both the health of the vines and the character of the terroir.

Gentle winemaking for a delicate grape

Pinot Noir rewards careful handling.

After harvest, fermentation lasts around eight days before the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften its natural acidity.

The wine is then clarified traditionally before bottling, allowing the purity of the fruit to remain at the forefront.

The goal is not to transform the grape, but simply to reveal its elegant nature.

In the glass – freshness and finesse

The Domaine Charbonnier Pinot Noir immediately displays the elegance that has made this grape famous.

Its brilliant garnet colour introduces aromas of ripe cherry and red berries, complemented by delicate hints of liquorice and subtle spice.

On the palate, the wine is supple and harmonious, with silky tannins and a freshness that makes every sip feel effortless.

It is refined without being austere, expressive without being overpowering.

A Pinot Noir made for the table

This is exactly the kind of wine that reminds us why French wines have always belonged alongside food.

Its freshness and gentle structure make it a wonderful partner for roast chicken, turkey, pork, mushroom dishes, or a simple charcuterie board.

Served slightly cool, around 14–16°C, it becomes even more vibrant and expressive.

The elegance of the Loire

The Loire Valley has never tried to imitate Burgundy.

Instead, it has developed its own interpretation of Pinot Noir—lighter, fresher, and wonderfully approachable.

The Domaine Charbonnier Pinot Noir is a perfect ambassador for that style: honest, elegant, and deeply rooted in its landscape.

A reminder that some of the Loire’s most beautiful discoveries are not always white.
