A powerful yet elegant Languedoc red born from patience, nature, and old Mediterranean vines

Some wines are named after a place.

Others are named after an idea.

The “Sortilège” 2022 from Les Éminades borrows its name from the French word for spell or enchantment—and it suits the wine perfectly. Deep, complex, and remarkably elegant, it captures the beauty of Saint-Chinian through careful farming, thoughtful winemaking, and a profound respect for nature.

It is a wine that doesn’t rely on excess to make an impression. Instead, it slowly reveals its character, glass after glass.

Saint-Chinian – one of the jewels of the Languedoc

Hidden between the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Massif Central, Saint-Chinian has quietly become one of the most respected appellations in southern France.

Its diversity of soils, varied elevations, and Mediterranean climate allow winemakers to produce wines with both generosity and freshness—a combination that has transformed the region’s reputation over the past two decades.

At around 300 metres above sea level, the vineyards for Sortilège benefit from cooler nights that preserve freshness while allowing the grapes to ripen beautifully under the southern sun.

Patricia and Luc – farming with conviction

Since 2002, Patricia and Luc, the founders of Domaine Les Éminades, have devoted themselves to revealing the extraordinary diversity of Saint-Chinian.

Their vineyards are surrounded by preserved landscapes and old Languedoc vines, and every decision in the vineyard reflects the same philosophy: respect the land, work with nature, and allow each terroir to express itself honestly.

Today, every wine produced at the estate is certified organic and biodynamic, reflecting years of careful work and an unwavering commitment to sustainable viticulture.

Biodynamics – a living vineyard

Organic farming protects the vineyard.

Biodynamics goes one step further.

It views the vineyard as a living ecosystem, encouraging biodiversity, healthy soils, and natural balance. Rather than simply avoiding synthetic chemicals, biodynamic growers aim to strengthen the vitality of the vines themselves.

Whether one approaches it from philosophy or practical viticulture, many of the world’s finest estates have embraced biodynamics because of the vitality and purity it can bring to their wines.

Sortilège is a wonderful example of that approach.

Mourvèdre takes the lead

The blend reflects the Mediterranean identity of Saint-Chinian:

  • 55% Mourvèdre
  • 40% Syrah
  • 5% Grenache

Mourvèdre is the soul of the wine, bringing depth, structure, and remarkable ageing potential.

Syrah contributes dark fruit, spice, and aromatic richness, while Grenache softens the blend with generosity and warmth.

The result is a wine that feels complete rather than dominated by any single variety.

Time as an ingredient

After hand harvesting and a rigorous selection of the grapes, fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, allowing the wine to ferment naturally with the yeasts present on the grapes and in the cellar.

The wine is then aged for 20 months in large oak demi-muids of 500 and 600 litres.

These larger barrels are chosen carefully. They allow slow oxygen exchange without marking the wine with excessive oak flavours, preserving the fruit while adding texture and harmony.

Patience is one of the essential ingredients of Sortilège.

In the glass – depth, elegance, and Mediterranean character

Sortilège immediately reveals a wine of remarkable complexity.

The nose opens with layers of ripe black fruit, wild herbs, subtle spices, and delicate floral notes, all supported by the gentle influence of its long maturation.

On the palate, the wine is generous and beautifully textured. The tannins are refined, the fruit remains vibrant, and the finish lingers with notes of spice, herbs, and the unmistakable character of the Mediterranean landscape.

Despite its concentration, the wine never feels heavy.

A wine made to age

While already expressive today, Sortilège has been built for the future.

Its balance, structure, and careful élevage give it the ability to evolve gracefully over eight to ten years, gradually revealing even greater complexity.

It is a wine that rewards patience—just as the vineyard rewards those who care for it year after year.

The enchantment of Saint-Chinian

The name Sortilège feels particularly appropriate.

Not because the wine is mysterious, but because it reminds us that great wines often feel almost magical: the meeting of landscape, climate, family, and time.

With Patricia and Luc’s dedication, the remarkable terroirs of Saint-Chinian, and a biodynamic philosophy that lets nature take the lead, Les Éminades Sortilège 2022 is a beautiful expression of modern Languedoc.

A wine that proves the greatest magic in winemaking is often simply allowing the vineyard to speak for itself.
