Discovering Bordeaux through the world of second wines

When we see a bottle from a prestigious Bordeaux château, we often imagine that every grape harvested on the estate ends up in the château’s grand vin.

But things are a little more complicated.

At many of Bordeaux’s great estates, the best wine is carefully selected from the very best parcels, vines and barrels.

And what happens to the rest?

They can become something equally fascinating: the second wine.

What exactly is a second wine?

A second wine is not simply a cheaper version of the grand vin.

It is made by the same estate, from grapes grown on the same property and under the same philosophy.

The difference is usually in the selection.

Young vines, particular parcels, or barrels that do not quite fit the château’s desired profile may be directed towards the second wine.

This means that the wine may be less powerful or complex than the winery’s flagship cuvée, but it can still offer an extraordinary insight into the terroir and the winemaking behind the château.

And sometimes, it can be a remarkably good way to discover a great estate without stepping immediately into the price of its grand vin.

The world of Château Saint-Pierre

Château Saint-Pierre is one of the historic estates of Saint-Julien, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.

It belongs to the prestigious group of 1855 Grand Cru Classé, a classification that has shaped the reputation of Bordeaux for generations.

Behind its grand vin lies the same attention to detail that defines the estate’s entire approach to winemaking.

And that is what makes its second wine so interesting.

II de Château Saint-Pierre

The II de Château Saint-Pierre 2015 comes from the same winery, under the same ownership and with the same experience behind it.

The grapes come from the château’s vineyards and are selected with the same philosophy: express the character of Saint-Julien while producing a wine that is elegant, balanced and enjoyable.

The 2015 vintage adds another dimension.

After several years of bottle ageing, the wine has had time to develop beyond its youthful fruit, allowing the texture, aromas and structure to become more harmonious.

It is Bordeaux with a little perspective.

Same Château, different expression

This is perhaps the most interesting thing about second wines.

They allow us to see how a great château works.

The grand vin represents the estate’s ultimate selection.

The second wine offers another interpretation of the same place.

It is a little like hearing the same musician perform two different pieces: the talent is still there, but the expression changes.

And for wine lovers, that can be fascinating.

A gateway into Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux

For anyone curious about the great names of Bordeaux, second wines can be an excellent place to start.

They offer access to the vineyards, philosophy and expertise of prestigious estates, often at a more approachable price than the grand vin.

But there is another reason to seek them out.

A well-made second wine is not something to drink while wishing you had the “real” bottle.

It should be enjoyable in its own right.

II de Château Saint-Pierre 2015 is exactly that: a mature, elegant Saint-Julien with the pedigree of a Grand Cru Classé winery behind it.

Why we love it at The French Paradox

We love wines that give you a glimpse behind the curtain.

A bottle of II de Château Saint-Pierre is not simply a less expensive way of drinking Bordeaux.

It is an opportunity to taste the same terroir, the same heritage and the same winemaking know-how, expressed through a different selection.

And perhaps that is the real beauty of second wines.

They remind us that behind every famous château, there is much more than one bottle.
