A Grand Cru Classé white from the birthplace of Bordeaux
When people think of Bordeaux, they often picture deep red wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, long ageing in oak and prestigious Left Bank and Right Bank châteaux.
But Bordeaux has another side.
In Pessac-Léognan, in the historic Graves region just south of the city, some of the great classified wineries also produce white wines of remarkable elegance and complexity.
The Château Olivier Blanc 2022 is a wonderful example.
Pessac-Léognan: more than red wine
Pessac-Léognan is perhaps best known for its red wines, but the appellation has a long tradition of producing exceptional whites.
The region’s gravelly soils, inherited from ancient river deposits, are particularly well suited to both red and white varieties.
And unlike many Bordeaux whites made simply for early drinking, the finest examples can develop beautifully with age.
They can be fresh and citrus-driven when young, yet gain layers of texture, spice and complexity over time.
A Grand Cru Classé white
Château Olivier has an important place in Bordeaux’s history.
The estate is one of the Grands Crus Classés de Graves, a classification created in 1953 and confirmed in 1959.
Unlike the famous 1855 classification, which is focused primarily on the Médoc and Sauternes, the Graves classification includes both red and white wines.
That means a bottle of Château Olivier Blanc carries something rather special on its label:
a classified Bordeaux white.
Sauvignon Blanc meets Sémillon
The traditional Bordeaux white blend is built around two varieties: Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.
Sauvignon brings freshness, citrus and aromatic energy.
Sémillon contributes body, texture and a certain richness that allows the wine to evolve beautifully with time.
Together, they can create a white Bordeaux that is much more complex than the simple image of a crisp Sauvignon might suggest.
The result is a wine that combines freshness with substance—precise enough to be refreshing, but serious enough to accompany a proper meal.
The 2022 vintage
The 2022 Château Olivier Blanc is a beautiful expression of this style.
It combines the freshness expected from a Bordeaux white with a richer, more textured character.
The aromatic profile moves between citrus and ripe white fruit, with floral and subtle mineral notes adding complexity.
On the palate, the wine has both freshness and generosity, with enough structure to make it particularly interesting at the table.
This is not a white Bordeaux designed simply to quench your thirst.
It is a wine to sit with.
To taste slowly.
To discover as it opens in the glass.
A château looking towards the future
There is another reason we like Château Olivier.
The estate is HVE Level 3 certified, the highest level of France’s High Environmental Value certification.
HVE focuses on the environmental performance of the entire farm, including biodiversity, plant protection, fertilisation and water management.
It is an important reminder that Bordeaux’s great wineries are not only looking backwards towards centuries of tradition.
They are also thinking about how that tradition can continue into the future.
A different way to discover Bordeaux
If your idea of Bordeaux begins and ends with red wine, Château Olivier Blanc is a good reason to reconsider.
Pessac-Léognan offers something wonderfully different: white wines with the pedigree of a Grand Cru Classé, the freshness of Sauvignon Blanc and the depth and texture that Sémillon brings to the blend.
And that is perhaps what makes Bordeaux so fascinating.
There is always another side to discover.
Château Olivier Blanc 2022 is one of ours.
