A particular charm to Chinon: wines that feel both light and profound at the same time.
When people speak about the great red wines of the Loire Valley, two names inevitably return: Bourgueil and Chinon. Though they share the same grape — Cabernet Franc — they often reveal very different personalities.
After discovering the Bourgueil from Domaine du Petit Bondieu, we are delighted to explore another side of the estate through their Chinon 2023 — a wine that captures the freshness, elegance, and energy that make this appellation so beloved among Loire wine enthusiasts.
Chinon – Cabernet Franc along the Vienne River
The appellation of Chinon stretches along the banks of the Vienne River, a tributary of the Loire. The landscape alternates between forests, limestone hills, gravel terraces, and clay-rich slopes, creating a wide diversity of expressions for Cabernet Franc.
Unlike some richer styles of red wine, Chinon is often defined by balance and drinkability. The wines tend to show vibrant fruit, floral notes, gentle spice, and a freshness that makes them incredibly versatile at the table.
It is a style rooted not in power, but in precision.
Domaine du Petit Bondieu – a family estate guided by Cabernet Franc
At Domaine du Petit Bondieu, Cabernet Franc is more than just a grape variety — it is the identity of the estate itself.
The Pichet family has worked vineyards in Restigné for generations, with the domaine founded by Jean-Marc Pichet in 1976 before being taken over by his son Thomas in 2012. Since then, the estate has continued to evolve with a strong commitment to organic viticulture, officially certified since 2010.
Originally focused on Bourgueil, the estate expanded into Chinon in 2016 with the acquisition of vineyards in the appellation, allowing them to explore another interpretation of Cabernet Franc.
Cabernet Franc – the signature of the Loire
In the Loire Valley, Cabernet Franc behaves differently than it does elsewhere in the world.
Rather than producing heavy, extracted wines, it often delivers something more subtle and expressive: red berries, violets, graphite, herbs, and gentle spice, all supported by lively acidity and fine tannins.
When grown on limestone and clay soils like those found around Chinon, the grape gains both freshness and texture, creating wines that feel energetic yet refined.
It is one of the reasons Loire Cabernet Franc has developed such a devoted following among wine lovers. Many enthusiasts describe the best examples as combining freshness, floral aromatics, and earthy complexity in a way few red wines can match.
Chinon 2023 – freshness and elegance
The 2023 vintage expresses this style beautifully.
The wine opens with aromas of red cherry, blackberry, violet, and subtle peppery notes. On the palate, the texture is supple and vibrant, carried by fresh acidity and soft tannins that give the wine immediate charm without sacrificing structure.
There is a natural ease to the wine — precise, juicy, and expressive, while still retaining the slightly savoury and mineral edge that defines great Chinon.
It is a wine that feels alive.
A different face of Cabernet Franc
Compared to the estate’s Bourgueil, this Chinon shows a slightly more lifted and elegant profile. Where Bourgueil often brings deeper structure and darker fruit, Chinon tends to emphasise freshness, floral notes, and finesse.
Together, they perfectly illustrate how the same grape can express itself differently depending on terroir.
An expressive and food-friendly red
Like many great wines from the Loire Valley, Chinon is deeply gastronomic. Its freshness and moderate structure make it remarkably adaptable — equally at ease alongside charcuterie, roasted poultry, grilled vegetables, or simply enjoyed with friends over conversation.
It is a wine that rarely overwhelms, but consistently invites another glass.
The quiet beauty of Chinon
Domaine du Petit Bondieu’s Chinon 2023 captures something essential about Loire Valley wines: authenticity without excess.
It does not rely on power or oak to make an impression. Instead, it speaks through freshness, balance, and clarity — qualities that make Cabernet Franc from Chinon one of the most rewarding and quietly sophisticated red wines in France.
