Why the Rhône Valley deserves to be known for its white wines too

When people think of the Rhône Valley, one colour usually comes to mind.

Red.

From the powerful Syrahs of the north to the generous Grenache-based blends of the south, the Rhône has built its reputation on some of France’s most celebrated red wines.

But there is another side to the valley that deserves far more attention.

Its white wines.

Fresh, aromatic and beautifully balanced, Rhône whites remain one of the region’s best-kept secrets.

More than just red wine

Although they represent only a small proportion of the Rhône’s production, white wines have been part of the valley’s history for centuries.

Rather than relying on one grape variety, they are often blends, each variety bringing its own personality.

Viognier contributes fragrant stone fruit and floral aromas.

Grenache Blanc offers generosity and texture.

Clairette brings freshness.

Roussanne adds elegance and complexity.

Marsanne contributes richness and depth.

Together, they create wines that are expressive without being overwhelming.

A blend that captures the Southern Rhône

The Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2025 from Domaine Saint Pierre combines all five classic Rhône varieties:

  • 30% Viognier
  • 20% Grenache Blanc
  • 20% Clairette
  • 15% Roussanne
  • 15% Marsanne

The vineyards grow on clay-limestone soils, where vines between twenty and fifty years old benefit from the Mediterranean climate, the famous Mistral wind and long, sunny summers.

Each grape plays its role, creating a wine that is both generous and remarkably fresh.

Aromatic, not sweet

One of the biggest misconceptions about Rhône whites is that aromatic wines must be sweet.

Not at all.

This wine is completely dry.

The aromas may suggest ripe apricot, white peach, citrus blossom and delicate flowers, but the palate remains crisp, lively and beautifully balanced.

Its richness comes from texture rather than sugar, giving the wine generosity without heaviness.

It is exactly the kind of complexity that keeps you coming back for another glass.

Crafted to preserve freshness

At Domaine Saint Pierre, the grapes are fully destemmed before undergoing a short cold skin maceration to gently extract aroma and flavour.

The juice is then fermented slowly at low temperature, around 16°C, preserving the purity and freshness of each variety.

The result is a white wine that feels vibrant, expressive and wonderfully clean.

A wonderfully versatile food wine

Few wines are as easy to pair with food.

This Côtes du Rhône Blanc is equally at home alongside grilled fish, roast chicken, creamy pasta, Mediterranean vegetables or soft goat’s cheese.

Its freshness keeps every dish lively, while its gentle richness allows it to accompany more generous flavours than many crisp white wines.

It is a wine that feels just as comfortable on a summer terrace as around a dinner table.

Why we love it at The French Paradox

The Rhône may always be famous for its reds.

But wines like Domaine Saint Pierre Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2025 remind us that the valley’s whites deserve far more recognition.

Fresh without being sharp.

Aromatic without being sweet.

Complex without being complicated.

Sometimes the greatest discoveries are not hidden in unfamiliar regions—they are simply the wines people forget to look for.
