A classic Rhône appellation that deserves far more attention than it gets

Some wine names are immediately familiar.

Côtes du Rhône is certainly one of them.

You’ll find it on wine lists all over the world, and for many people it has become the benchmark for generous, easy-drinking southern French reds.

But look a little closer and you’ll sometimes notice an extra word on the label: Villages.

It may seem like a small detail, but it tells an important story.

More than just Côtes du Rhône

The Côtes du Rhône appellation stretches for over 200 kilometres along the Rhône River, from just south of Lyon all the way to Avignon.

It is one of France’s largest wine regions, producing wines in many different styles and from a remarkable diversity of vineyards.

Within this vast area, certain villages consistently produce wines of greater concentration and character.

These communes are recognised under the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation, a step above the classic Côtes du Rhône.

The vineyards generally come from better sites, lower yields are required, and the wines tend to offer more depth, complexity and ageing potential while remaining wonderfully approachable.

Southern Rhône in a bottle

The Mas de Boislauzon Côtes du Rhône Villages 2023 is everything people love about the Southern Rhône.

Generous fruit.

Mediterranean herbs.

Silky texture.

Warm sunshine captured in a glass.

The blend is led by Grenache, supported by the classic Rhône varieties that bring spice, freshness and structure. The result is a wine that feels generous without ever becoming heavy.

It is the kind of bottle that is equally at home on a weekday dinner table or shared among friends at a long weekend lunch.

A family we have trusted for years

At The French Paradox, Mas de Boislauzon is much more than another Rhône producer.

It is a family estate whose wines we have proudly imported for many years.

They are perhaps best known for their magnificent Châteauneuf-du-Pape, wines of remarkable depth and elegance that have become favourites among our customers.

But what impresses us most is that the same philosophy runs through their entire range.

Whether it is their flagship wines or their more accessible cuvées, every bottle carries the same care in the vineyard and the same respect for the fruit.

The perfect everyday Rhône

Not every occasion calls for a prestigious bottle.

Sometimes you simply want a wine that is generous, comforting and reliably delicious.

This is exactly where a great Côtes du Rhône Villages shines.

The 2023 vintage offers ripe red berries, black cherries and gentle notes of pepper, thyme and garrigue, all wrapped in soft tannins that make it immediately enjoyable.

It is wonderfully versatile with food, pairing beautifully with grilled meats, roast chicken, sausages, slow-cooked dishes or a generous cheeseboard.

Why we love it at The French Paradox

Some wines impress because of their reputation.

Others, like Mas de Boislauzon’s Côtes du Rhône Villages 2023, earn a permanent place on our shelves because they never disappoint.

It captures everything we love about the Southern Rhône: generosity, warmth and authenticity, all delivered with remarkable consistency.

If you’ve enjoyed their Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this is the bottle to open on an ordinary Tuesday.

Because great winemakers don’t just make great flagship wines.

They make outstanding everyday wines too.
