The story of a family, a terroir and the two trees that became their emblem
Look closely at the bottles of Mas de Boislauzon and you will notice two oak trees.
They are not simply a logo.
A few steps from the winery, these two trees mark the boundary between two appellations: Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône Villages.
For the Chaussy-Laget family, they have become a symbol of the domaine itself.
And perhaps there is no better way to introduce their Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tradition 2022.
A family story spanning six generations
Mas de Boislauzon is very much a family affair.
The Chaussy-Laget family’s history in the vineyards stretches back six generations. Today, Christine and Daniel represent the fifth generation, working alongside Quentin, Joris and Arnaud of the sixth.
Everyone has a role to play, from the vineyard to the cellar.
That continuity is important at Boislauzon. The wines are not designed simply to represent an appellation. They are meant to express the family’s understanding of the land they have worked for generations.
The two oaks
The story of the two trees is particularly charming.
The vineyard lies right beside the boundary separating the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation from Côtes du Rhône Villages.
The two oak trees mark that line.
On one side, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
On the other, Côtes du Rhône Villages.
Yet the vineyards are remarkably close, and the domaine works with a remarkable variety of soils across its 34 hectares: clay, sand and the famous rolled pebbles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The trees have therefore become much more than a geographical marker.
They are the emblem of Mas de Boislauzon, appearing across their labels and imagery.
The emblem of the domaine
Among all the wines produced at Boislauzon, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tradition occupies a special place.
The domaine itself describes it as its emblematic wine — the cuvée that best illustrates its terroirs and know-how.
The 2022 is built around the classic southern Rhône partnership of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, with 70% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah.
Grenache brings generosity, ripe fruit and warmth.
Mourvèdre brings depth.
Syrah brings structure and spice.
Together, they create the kind of Châteauneuf-du-Pape that feels both generous and grounded.
Organic, then biodynamic
There is another important part of the Boislauzon story.
The family has farmed organically since 2012 and moved towards biodynamic farming in 2021.
The philosophy is based on protecting the soil and the wider environment, with mechanical work between the vines and particular attention paid to pruning and green harvesting.
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand and sorted directly in the vineyard.
The family also bottles its wines at the estate, maintaining complete autonomy from vineyard to bottle.
For Boislauzon, biodynamics is not presented as a fashionable label, but as a way of observing and understanding the vine and its environment.
A classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The 2022 Tradition is a wine that doesn’t need to reinvent Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
It simply needs to express it well.
Expect generous southern Rhône fruit, with the Grenache providing the warmth and roundness, while Mourvèdre adds darker fruit, spice and structure.
There is power here, but also the balance that comes from careful vineyard work and a terroir capable of producing wines with both richness and freshness.
It is a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the best possible sense.
A wine we have known for years
At The French Paradox, Mas de Boislauzon is a domaine we have been fortunate to work with for many years.
We love their more ambitious cuvées, but there is something particularly satisfying about the Tradition.
It is the wine that tells you what the domaine is about.
The family.
The terroir.
The southern Rhône.
And, of course, those two oak trees standing quietly at the edge of the vineyard.
Sometimes the simplest symbols tell the best stories.
