Description
Château Martet Réserve de Famille 2021 is the flagship cuvée of this Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux estate, crafted entirely from Merlot and aged for around 18 months in new oak barrels. It is a wine built in a deliberately serious, structured style, reflecting both concentration and finesse from a carefully managed vineyard and modern winemaking approach.
The nose is deep and expressive, opening with ripe black cherry, blackcurrant, and plum, layered with hints of violet, sweet spice, and subtle truffle notes. Oak ageing brings additional complexity, adding vanilla, cedar, and cocoa without overwhelming the fruit. There is a sense of depth and ripeness from the outset, typical of this cuvée’s “grand vin” ambition.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, with a plush, velvety texture. The Merlot delivers richness and generosity, while the tannins remain finely structured and polished, giving shape and length rather than heaviness. Flavours of dark berries, crushed plum, and spice unfold gradually, followed by more savoury nuances of earth, graphite, and dark chocolate.
Despite its power, the 2022 vintage shows balance and freshness, keeping the wine lifted and preventing it from becoming overly dense. The finish is long, layered, and persistent, with a combination of ripe fruit, fine oak spice, and mineral tension.
Château Martet Réserve de Famille 2022 is a wine that can be enjoyed with decanting now, but it will also reward cellaring over the next 10–15+ years as it develops further complexity. It pairs well with roast beef, lamb, duck, and rich mushroom-based dishes. A bold, polished Right Bank Bordeaux that combines modern richness with classical structure.
