Description
Domaine Les Brunes is the flagship cuvée of Philippe Chesnelong in Valros, a deeply structured and age-worthy wine that expresses the full potential of its distinctive terroir. Sourced from dark, basaltic soils—ancient volcanic formations that give the wine its name—it is typically composed of a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre, delivering both power and precision.
The nose is rich and intense, opening with concentrated aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and dark cherry, layered with notes of cocoa, cedar, and sweet spice. Subtle hints of vanilla and toasted oak emerge from extended barrel ageing, adding depth and complexity without overpowering the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with a dense core of ripe black fruit supported by firm yet polished tannins. Despite its power, it retains a sense of balance and refinement—often described as “iron fist in a velvet glove”—with a smooth, enveloping texture and well-integrated oak.
A fresh underlying acidity brings lift and precision, while the volcanic soils impart a subtle mineral tension that carries through the wine. As it evolves, savoury and spicy nuances become more pronounced, enhancing its depth and complexity.
The finish is long, persistent, and layered, marked by lingering dark fruit, spice, and a refined, slightly smoky edge. “Les Brunes” is a serious, cellar-worthy wine, ideally suited to rich dishes such as roasted lamb, game, or slow-cooked meats, where its structure and intensity can fully shine.
