Description
Hervé Kerlann’s Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2019 comes from one of the most respected villages of the Côte de Nuits, where Pinot Noir takes on a darker, more structured and savoury expression. The cuvée is sourced from older vine parcels, which naturally produce lower yields and more concentrated fruit, enhancing both depth and complexity in the final wine. The 2019 vintage, marked by warm but balanced conditions in Burgundy, delivered wines with ripe fruit, firm structure and excellent ageing potential.
The vineyards lie on the classic limestone and marl soils that define Gevrey-Chambertin, giving the wine its characteristic backbone and mineral tension. These soils, combined with the age of the vines, contribute to a profile that is both powerful and refined, with a strong sense of place rooted in the northern Côte de Nuits.
Vinification is carried out with a focus on preserving fruit intensity while building structure. Fermentation is carefully managed to ensure balanced extraction, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, typically with a measured proportion of new wood. This élevage adds subtle spice and texture while allowing the natural depth of the fruit to remain at the forefront.
In the glass, the 2019 vintage reveals a deep ruby colour and an expressive aromatic profile of black cherry, cassis and wild blackberry, layered with notes of forest floor, black pepper and fine oak spice. The palate is dense and structured, with firm yet well-integrated tannins and a vibrant acidity that brings balance and length. The finish is long, savoury and slightly mineral, reflecting the appellation’s classic style.
A serious and age-worthy Gevrey-Chambertin, the 2019 Vieilles Vignes is best suited to cellaring but already shows impressive depth and harmony. It pairs beautifully with roasted meats, game dishes or rich, earthy cuisine, and reflects the traditional power and elegance of this emblematic Burgundy village.
