Description
Domaine Rossignol is a traditional Burgundian estate rooted in the Côte de Beaune, known for crafting wines that emphasise elegance, balance and a clear expression of terroir. With a focus on careful vineyard work and restrained winemaking, the domaine produces Pinot Noir that leans toward finesse rather than power, reflecting the classic style of its appellations.
The Volnay 2019 comes from one of Burgundy’s most celebrated villages for refined and perfumed Pinot Noir. Often described as one of the most “feminine” expressions of the Côte de Beaune, Volnay is prized for its silky textures, floral aromatics and graceful structure. The 2019 vintage, marked by warm and dry conditions, brought excellent ripeness while retaining enough freshness to preserve balance and definition.
The vineyards are planted on classic limestone-rich soils with a proportion of clay, contributing both structure and aromatic lift. In Volnay, these soils tend to produce wines with fine tannins and a delicate, almost lace-like texture, rather than overt density. Domaine Rossignol’s parcels reflect this style, favouring elegance and clarity over extraction.
In the cellar, the approach is traditional and measured: hand-harvested grapes are carefully sorted and fermented with controlled extraction to preserve finesse. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels, with a modest proportion of new oak, allowing the fruit and terroir to remain at the forefront while adding subtle complexity and texture.
In the glass, the 2019 reveals a bright ruby colour and a beautifully expressive nose of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, complemented by delicate floral notes of violet and rose petal, along with a hint of spice. The palate is supple and finely textured, with silky tannins and a fresh, lifted acidity that gives the wine energy and length. The finish is elegant and persistent, marked by purity of fruit and a gentle mineral nuance.
A quintessential Volnay, this wine is approachable yet refined, offering immediate pleasure while retaining the capacity to evolve over the medium term. It pairs beautifully with roast poultry, veal or mushroom-based dishes, and reflects the timeless elegance and charm of this iconic Burgundy village.
