Description
Cuvée Romana 2022 is an expressive and unconventional Pomerol from the Pradel de Lavaux family, sourced from the gravelly and sandy soils of Château La Renaissance. Made entirely from Merlot, this cuvée stands apart for its unique approach to vinification, using amphorae (clay vessels) instead of traditional oak barrels. This method allows for a gentle, oxygen-balanced ageing process that preserves fruit purity while refining texture.
The nose is precise and aromatic, opening with pure black cherry, ripe plum, and blackberry, followed by floral violet tones and a subtle mineral lift. As it evolves in the glass, hints of spice and crushed stone emerge, giving the bouquet both clarity and depth without heaviness.
On the palate, the wine is supple and beautifully textured, with an almost silky mouthfeel that reflects the amphora ageing. The fruit is clean and focused, supported by fine-grained tannins and a fresh, energetic backbone. There is a sense of immediacy and vibrancy here, but also underlying structure that allows the wine to remain composed and persistent through the finish.
Unlike more traditionally oaked Pomerols, Cuvée Romana emphasises transparency and purity rather than overt richness. The result is a wine that feels modern in style but rooted in classical terroir expression. It pairs well with roast lamb, poultry, spiced dishes, and aged cheeses, and can be enjoyed in its youth or over the next several years as it gains further nuance.
A distinctive and thoughtful Pomerol that highlights both innovation and finesse on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.
