Why Pouilly-Fumé deserves to stand alongside its famous neighbour, Sancerre.

Mention Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley, and most people immediately think of Sancerre.

Its crisp, mineral whites have become classics around the world.

Yet just across the Loire River lies another legendary appellation, producing wines from exactly the same grape variety.

Pouilly-Fumé.

Separated from Sancerre by only a few hundred metres of water, these two appellations have developed distinct personalities, each expressing Sauvignon Blanc in its own way.

The Pouilly-Fumé 2023 from Domaine Fouassier is a wonderful example of why this historic appellation deserves every bit as much attention.

Two neighbours, two identities

Both Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc.

So what makes them different?

The answer lies in the terroir.

While both appellations share limestone and flint-rich soils, Pouilly-Fumé often produces wines with a slightly broader texture and the subtle smoky, flinty character that gave the appellation its name. (“Fumé” refers not to oak or smoke, but to the delicate smoky minerality often found in the wines.)

Rather than competing, the two appellations complement each other beautifully, offering two equally authentic expressions of one of France’s greatest white grape varieties.

Ten generations of dedication

The story of Domaine Fouassier is also a story of family.

The estate has been passed down through ten generations, each contributing to its development while remaining faithful to its vineyards.

Pierre Fouassier helped expand the domaine during the 1960s, followed by his brother Jean-Michel, before the tenth generation arrived with Benoit and Paul at the beginning of the new millennium.

Together, they have continued to refine both the vineyards and the wines while remaining deeply committed to the identity of their terroirs.

Farming with nature

Domaine Fouassier has long believed that exceptional wines begin with healthy vineyards.

The entire estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, a philosophy that goes beyond simply avoiding synthetic chemicals.

Working with the natural rhythms of the seasons, encouraging living soils and treating each vineyard as a complete ecosystem allows the vines to express their terroir with remarkable clarity.

For the Fouassier family, caring for the vineyard is not a trend.

It is simply the most honest way to make wine.

Freshness, purity and elegance

The 2023 vintage captures everything that makes great Pouilly-Fumé so appealing.

The nose reveals aromas of citrus, white peach and fresh herbs, lifted by delicate floral notes and the subtle flinty character that is the hallmark of the appellation.

On the palate, the wine is vibrant, beautifully balanced and wonderfully refreshing. Its lively acidity carries the fruit effortlessly, while the long mineral finish leaves an impression of purity and finesse.

It is a wine that feels both classic and timeless.

Why we love it at The French Paradox

Some wines need no introduction.
