Description
Domaine Fouassier Pouilly-Fumé 2023 is a pure and terroir-driven expression of Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley, crafted by a family estate renowned for its long-standing commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The Fouassier family, one of the oldest winegrowing dynasties in Sancerre, applies the same philosophy to their Pouilly-Fumé: low intervention in the cellar and a strong focus on soil expression and balance.
In the glass, the wine shows a pale, luminous straw colour with green highlights, signalling freshness and energy. The nose is expressive yet precise, opening with citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit, alongside green apple, gooseberry, and subtle hints of white flowers. A signature smoky-flinty note—typical of Pouilly-Fumé’s silex soils—adds complexity and definition to the aromatic profile.
On the palate, the wine is crisp, linear, and well-structured, driven by vibrant acidity that gives lift and clarity to the fruit. Flavours of citrus zest, green orchard fruit, and a touch of passion fruit unfold over a fine mineral backbone. The texture is clean and focused, with a slightly saline edge that enhances the sense of precision and freshness.
The finish is long, dry, and distinctly mineral, leaving lingering impressions of citrus peel, flint, and mouthwatering freshness. This is a Pouilly-Fumé that prioritises purity and tension over richness, showcasing the appellation’s hallmark balance between fruit expression and smoky minerality.
Highly versatile, it is an excellent match for oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, and fresh goat’s cheese, where its acidity and mineral drive cut beautifully through richness. It also works perfectly as a refined aperitif. The 2023 vintage highlights clarity, energy, and terroir expression, making it a textbook example of elegant Loire Sauvignon Blanc with a distinctly Fouassier identity.
