A confidential cuvée where depth, freshness, and patience come together
Some wines are built around power. Others around elegance. Renaissance 2023 from Château de Jonquières manages to unite both — a deeply expressive wine from the remarkable terroirs of the Terrasses du Larzac, where Mourvèdre takes centre stage.
Produced in very limited quantities, this cuvée reflects years of careful vineyard work and a clear philosophy: seeking the perfect balance between terroir and the hand of the winemaker.
At The French Paradox, these are the wines that leave a lasting impression — precise, ambitious, and deeply connected to their landscape.
Terrasses du Larzac – freshness within the Languedoc
Located in the northern part of the Languedoc, at the foothills of the Larzac plateau, the Terrasses du Larzac appellation has become one of the most exciting wine regions in southern France.
Unlike the hotter coastal zones, this area benefits from significant day-to-night temperature variations. Warm Mediterranean days are balanced by cool nighttime air descending from the plateau, allowing the grapes to retain freshness and aromatic precision.
The result is a style of wine that combines southern generosity with surprising tension and elegance.
Château de Jonquières – patience and craftsmanship
At Château de Jonquières, the philosophy is built around patience and balance.
The estate seeks neither excessive extraction nor overpowering oak, but rather harmony between fruit, structure, ageing, and terroir expression. Every vintage is approached with restraint and precision, allowing the vineyard itself to remain central.
The name “Renaissance” feels particularly appropriate here — a wine that reveals depth slowly, evolving with air and time in the glass.
Mourvèdre – the dominant voice
The soul of Renaissance 2023 is clearly Mourvèdre.
A grape often associated with Mediterranean climates, Mourvèdre brings structure, spice, dark fruit, and a naturally savoury complexity. It is demanding both in the vineyard and in the cellar, requiring full ripeness and careful ageing to reveal its elegance.
Here, it dominates the blend, supported by smaller proportions of Syrah and Grenache, which contribute freshness, fruit, and roundness.
The result is a wine where Mourvèdre remains fully expressive, but never austere.
Twenty months of élevage – texture over power
Renaissance 2023 is aged for 20 months in Burgundy-style barrels, using both 228L and 500L formats.
This long élevage is not used to dominate the wine, but to refine it. The larger barrels preserve freshness and fruit purity, while the smaller formats gently soften the tannins and add subtle complexity.
The oak remains integrated, supporting the structure without masking the terroir.
What emerges is not a heavily wooded wine, but a wine shaped by time.
A wine of depth and freshness
In the glass, Renaissance shows a deep colour with ruby reflections. The aromatic profile is remarkably layered: eucalyptus, rosemary, clove, black pepper, mocha, and balsamic notes unfold gradually alongside dark fruit.
Despite its concentration, the wine retains freshness and lift — a signature of the Terrasses du Larzac terroir.
On the palate, the tannins are refined and beautifully integrated. The texture feels velvety rather than heavy, with a long, savoury finish carried by spice and herbal complexity.
It is a wine that combines southern warmth with remarkable precision.
A confidential cuvée with a clear identity
Renaissance is not a wine designed for mass production or immediate impact. It is a small-production cuvée built around detail, patience, and expression.
Its strength lies not only in its intensity, but in its balance — the way freshness, structure, oak, and Mediterranean aromatics coexist naturally.
A modern vision of the south
With Renaissance 2023, Château de Jonquières demonstrates how far the Languedoc has evolved.
This is no longer a region defined solely by power or sun-drenched richness. In the hands of thoughtful producers, the Terrasses du Larzac is capable of producing wines of remarkable finesse and complexity.
Renaissance captures exactly that spirit: a southern wine with depth, but also restraint, elegance, and quiet confidence.
