A pure expression of fruit, precision, and modern gravity-fed ageing

Some wines stand out not because of power, but because of the clarity of their construction. Tandem 2024 from Château Lamartine, a 100% Malbec from Cahors, is one of those wines — a cuvée where vineyard precision and innovative ageing work hand in hand.

Organic, focused, and beautifully defined, it reflects a contemporary vision of Cahors, while remaining deeply rooted in its historic identity.

Cahors – the original land of Malbec

Cahors is one of the historical homes of Malbec, known locally as Côt.

The vineyards sit along the Lot River, where limestone plateaus and high terraces create ideal conditions for structured, age-worthy red wines. Traditionally powerful and deeply coloured, Cahors wines are now increasingly explored in fresher, more precise styles — without losing their identity.

Tandem belongs to this new generation: expressive, but controlled; generous, but refined.

Château Lamartine – precision on high limestone terroir

Château Lamartine works on high-altitude limestone slopes, where 30-year-old vines are carefully cultivated with strict yield control — around 40 hl/ha — to ensure concentration and balance.

The estate follows organic principles, with a strong focus on manual vineyard work and respect for natural cycles. The goal is not intervention, but precision — allowing the Malbec to express both its fruit and its structure with clarity.

Vinification – gentle extraction, natural expression

Tandem is vinified without added sulphur during fermentation, using a gentle extraction approach with pigeage (punching down the cap). Maceration lasts around ten days, and fermentation takes place at low temperature to preserve aromatic freshness.

This careful approach ensures that the wine retains bright fruit character while avoiding heaviness or excessive tannic extraction.

The philosophy is simple: preserve energy, not just concentration.

A modern approach to ageing – egg tanks and concrete

What truly defines Tandem is its elevage, and more specifically, the vessels used:
concrete vats and egg-shaped tanks (cuves ovoïdes verticales).

These are increasingly used in modern winemaking, not because they are fashionable, but because they naturally support the movement and balance of wine.

The egg-shaped concrete tank works through a subtle principle: natural convection. As temperature changes inside the tank, the wine circulates gently in a continuous movement. This keeps the lees in suspension without mechanical intervention, enhancing texture and mouthfeel.

Concrete itself is neutral, meaning it does not impart any flavour — unlike oak. It allows the fruit to remain pure while gaining structure and depth.

In Tandem, 70% of the wine is aged in these egg-shaped tanks, while 30% matures in traditional concrete vats. The combination creates a balance between roundness and freshness.

Tandem 2024 – purity and texture in motion

The result is a Malbec that feels both precise and fluid.

The nose opens with dark cherry, blackberry, violet, and subtle spice. There is immediate freshness, supported by a clean, lifted aromatic profile.

On the palate, the texture is where the wine truly stands out. The egg ageing brings a smooth, almost silky mid-palate, while the concrete preserves linearity and tension. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, never overpowering the fruit.

It is a wine that feels alive in motion — hence the name “Tandem”.

A new expression of Cahors

Cahors has long been associated with deeply structured, powerful Malbec. Tandem offers a different perspective: still rooted in the same terroir, but shaped by gentler extraction and innovative ageing.

It shows that Malbec can be both structured and refined, both serious and accessible, without losing its identity.

A dialogue between tradition and innovation

Château Lamartine’s Tandem is not about breaking with tradition, but about refining it.

By combining organic farming, careful vinification, and modern vessel design, the estate creates a wine that respects the essence of Cahors while pushing its expression forward.

It is a wine where every element works in balance — vineyard, grape, and vessel — moving together in harmony.
