A single-vineyard Chardonnay that reveals the quiet elegance of the Côte Chalonnaise

When people speak about Burgundy, names such as Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet or Chablis usually dominate the conversation.

Yet just to the south of the Côte de Beaune lies a region that quietly produces some of Burgundy’s finest value: the Rully appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise.

The “La Barre” 2023 from Domaine Ninot is a wonderful example of why this village deserves far more attention. More than a Chardonnay, it is the expression of a single climat—a specific vineyard whose identity has been shaped by its history, its altitude, and its limestone soils.

What is a climat?

In Burgundy, the word climat has nothing to do with the weather.

Instead, it describes a precisely defined vineyard parcel that has been recognised over centuries for producing wines with a unique personality.

Each climat has its own soil, exposure, altitude and history, often separated from its neighbour by little more than a stone wall or a narrow path.

This extraordinary mosaic is one of the reasons Burgundy is unlike any other wine region in the world.

La Barre is one of those remarkable places.

A vineyard at the top of the hill

The name La Barre comes from the Latin barra, itself derived from the Gallic word meaning “summit” or “height.”

The vineyard sits on a rocky plateau at around 300 metres above sea level, on the summit of Mont Palais.

Here, the vines grow on chalky brown soils over limestone and clay, while a forest along the ridge protects them from strong winds.

This unique environment creates a cooler microclimate that allows the grapes to ripen slowly, preserving freshness while developing remarkable aromatic complexity.

It is this elevated position that gives La Barre its distinctive personality.

A family deeply rooted in Rully

The story of Domaine Ninot stretches back centuries.

The Ninot family have been winegrowers and coopers since the fourteenth century, making them one of the historic families of Rully.

The modern estate owes much to Pierre-Marie Ninot, who rebuilt the family domaine almost from scratch after his father’s death forced the sale of much of the original property.

Patiently, he recovered vineyards, expanded the estate, and eventually entrusted it to his children.

Today, Erell and Flavien Ninot work side by side.

Erell brings an international perspective after years abroad promoting Burgundy, while Flavien, trained as a cooper before becoming a winemaker, combines technical knowledge with a profound respect for the land.

Together, they represent a new generation that honours its heritage while constantly refining the expression of each vineyard.

Organic farming, natural winemaking

The vineyards are certified organic, with every effort made to preserve the life of the soils and encourage healthy vines.

In the cellar, the philosophy remains equally respectful.

Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts, allowing the vintage and the vineyard to express themselves naturally.

The wine is then aged for twelve months in Burgundian oak barrels, with only 10% new oak, resting on its fine lees without bâtonnage.

The objective is never to imprint the wine with oak, but simply to accompany its evolution while preserving the purity of the Chardonnay and the identity of La Barre.

In the glass – elegance at altitude

La Barre immediately reflects the freshness of its elevated vineyard.

The nose reveals aromas of crisp white orchard fruits, delicate white flowers and subtle mineral notes.

On the palate, the wine is both lively and beautifully textured. Bright acidity brings energy, while the careful barrel ageing adds depth without overwhelming the fruit.

The finish is long, clean and saline, leaving an impression of remarkable precision and freshness.

It is a Chardonnay that speaks quietly—but with confidence.

A Burgundy built for the table… and for patience

Already delicious today, La Barre also has the structure to develop beautifully over the coming years.

With three to seven years of bottle age, its floral freshness gradually evolves towards greater complexity while maintaining the elegance that defines the vineyard.

Whether enjoyed as an apéritif or alongside scallops, roast fish, poultry in a cream sauce or mature Comté, it is a wine that reminds us why Chardonnay and Burgundy remain one of the world’s great partnerships.

One vineyard, one family, one identity

Every bottle of La Barre tells several stories at once.

The story of a hilltop vineyard protected by forests.

The story of a family that has cultivated Rully for centuries.

And the story of a generation determined to let each climat speak with its own voice.

The Domaine Ninot Rully “La Barre” 2023 is more than a white Burgundy.

It is a reminder that some of Burgundy’s greatest treasures are not always found in its most famous villages, but in places like Rully, where remarkable terroirs continue to express themselves with honesty, elegance and quiet confidence.
