Vouvray – where Chenin Blanc feels at home
Few grape varieties are as closely linked to a single place as Chenin Blanc is to Vouvray.
For centuries, this small appellation on the banks of the Loire has demonstrated the extraordinary versatility of the grape. Dry wines, off-dry wines, sweet wines, sparkling wines—few regions in the world can produce such diversity from a single variety.
Yet all of them share the same signature: freshness, elegance, and remarkable ageing potential.
A family rooted in Vouvray since 1761
The story of Maison Darragon is first and foremost a family story.
The estate has been rooted in Vouvray since 1761, with generations devoted to one grape above all others: Chenin Blanc.
Today, Christelle and David Charbonnier represent the new generation. David, himself the son of a Touraine winegrower, joined his father-in-law Pierre Darragon in 2008 before gradually taking over the family estate alongside Christelle.
Their ambition is simple: preserve the family’s traditions while allowing each cuvée to express its own personality.
Working with respect for nature, the estate is certified High Environmental Value (HVE), with vineyard practices designed to intervene only when truly necessary.
Why “Les Tuffes”?
The name of the wine is no coincidence.
It refers to the famous tuffeau limestone, the soft white stone that defines much of the Loire Valley and from which many of its magnificent châteaux were built.
Beneath the vineyards of Vouvray, these chalky limestone soils provide ideal conditions for Chenin Blanc.
They store water during dry periods, encourage deep root systems, and contribute the freshness and mineral character that have become hallmarks of the appellation.
The estate also works parcels containing flint-rich soils, adding another layer of precision and vitality to its wines.
The beauty of a dry Chenin Blanc
Chenin Blanc is one of the world’s most versatile grapes.
Its naturally high acidity allows it to produce wines ranging from sparkling to luscious dessert wines.
But in a dry style like Les Tuffes, its personality shines in a particularly elegant way.
Rather than relying on sweetness or oak, the wine expresses the grape itself: bright fruit, lively freshness, subtle floral notes, and a beautiful mineral backbone.
It is a wine built on balance.
Winemaking focused on purity
At Maison Darragon, the objective is to preserve the freshness of the fruit.
The wines are vinified mainly in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before resting in the family’s traditional troglodyte cellars, carved directly into the tuffeau limestone.
These naturally cool underground caves have been used throughout the Loire Valley for generations and provide ideal conditions for the slow maturation of wine.
The result is a style that remains clean, vibrant, and wonderfully expressive.
In the glass – freshness, finesse, and minerality
Les Tuffes immediately reveals the elegance of dry Vouvray.
The nose opens with citrus fruits, crisp orchard apples, white flowers, and delicate hints of pear, supported by subtle mineral notes.
On the palate, the wine is lively and beautifully balanced. Bright acidity gives the wine energy, while the texture remains soft and harmonious.
The finish is long, refreshing, and quietly complex, inviting another sip.
A white wine for every table
One of the greatest strengths of dry Chenin Blanc is its versatility.
Les Tuffes pairs effortlessly with seafood, grilled fish, poultry, fresh goat’s cheese, or simply as an aperitif on a warm afternoon.
Its freshness allows it to complement food rather than compete with it.
Another face of Chenin Blanc
One of the joys of following Maison Darragon is discovering just how many personalities Chenin Blanc can have.
If L’Inédit explored texture and gentle oak, and Héritage celebrated the subtle sweetness of Vouvray, Les Tuffes returns to the essentials.
Fresh fruit. Limestone. Precision. Purity.
A wine that reminds us why Vouvray remains one of the world’s great homes for Chenin Blanc—and why sometimes, simplicity is the most elegant expression of all.
