Description
Château Chevessac Pineau des Charentes Rosé (4 years old) is a refined and expressive example of this traditional fortified wine from western France. Like all Pineau des Charentes, it is made by blending fresh grape must with Cognac eau-de-vie, a process that stops fermentation and preserves natural sweetness, before ageing in oak barrels to develop complexity and texture.
Crafted from red grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc, rosé Pineau is known for its fruit-driven profile and vibrant colour. Aged for around four years in oak, this cuvée strikes a balance between youthful freshness and early maturity, gaining roundness and subtle spice from its time in barrel.
In the glass, it shows an intense pink to light copper hue with slightly evolved tones. The nose is expressive and aromatic, offering notes of ripe red fruits such as raspberry and Morello cherry, often accompanied by a gentle floral lift and a hint of spice.
On the palate, the wine is supple and generous, with a smooth, velvety texture. Flavours of red berries dominate—cherry, strawberry, and raspberry—enhanced by subtle spicy undertones from oak ageing. The sweetness is well-balanced by freshness and moderate alcohol (around 17%), giving the wine a harmonious and easy-drinking profile.
The finish is long and aromatic, leaving lingering impressions of red fruit and soft spice. Compared to the white version, the rosé offers a slightly more vivid fruit character and a touch more structure, making it particularly engaging.
This Pineau is extremely versatile. Traditionally served chilled as an aperitif, it also pairs beautifully with melon, fruit desserts, and blue cheeses, where its sweetness and fruit intensity provide contrast and balance.
Overall, Château Chevessac Pineau des Charentes Rosé (4 years) is a charming and characterful fortified wine—combining freshness, sweetness, and subtle oak complexity in a style that is both accessible and distinctly regional.
