Description
Made by Mas Gabinèle in the Languedoc village of Laurens, this wonderfully unusual white brings together twelve different grey and rosé grape varieties in a single bottle, including Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Gris, Muscat à Petits Grains Rose, Savagnin Rose and Grenache Gris.
Rather than allowing one grape to dominate, each contributes something different — perfume, freshness, fruit, texture or spice — creating a wine that is wonderfully difficult to categorise.
The vines grow on the distinctive sandstone schist soils of Laurens-Cabrières, on the foothills of the Cévennes. The grapes are hand harvested, then fermented in a combination of stainless steel and new oak before spending six months on fine lees, giving the wine plenty of texture while retaining its freshness.
The 2018 vintage produced just 1,400 bottles, making this already unusual wine particularly rare.
In the glass, expect white and yellow peach, Williams pear, grey pepper and a touch of cinnamon, with a generous, textured palate balanced by freshness.
