Description
Jean-Paul Dubost, based in the Beaujolais region, is known for producing wines that combine tradition with a thoughtful, low-intervention approach. Working with old vines and sustainable vineyard practices, he focuses on expressing the character of each appellation with clarity, favouring natural winemaking techniques that preserve the integrity of the fruit and terroir.
The Moulin-à-Vent “Vin Naturel” 2020 is made from Gamay grown in one of Beaujolais’ most structured and age-worthy crus. Moulin-à-Vent is often considered the most “Burgundian” of the Beaujolais appellations, thanks to its granite-rich soils and capacity to produce wines with both depth and longevity. In this cuvée, the natural approach brings a more immediate, vibrant expression of the terroir.
The 2020 vintage was warm and generous, producing ripe fruit with good concentration while maintaining enough freshness to ensure balance. In Moulin-à-Vent, this results in wines that combine richness with structure, offering both immediate appeal and ageing potential.
In the cellar, the wine is made with minimal intervention: fermentation with indigenous yeasts, limited or no added sulphites, and gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity. The aim is to produce a “vin naturel” that is alive, expressive and true to its origin. Ageing is typically carried out in neutral vessels to maintain clarity and avoid excessive oak influence.
In the glass, the 2020 reveals a deep ruby colour and an expressive aromatic profile of blackberry, black cherry and plum, complemented by notes of violet, pepper and a hint of earth. The palate is juicy and supple, with soft tannins and a fresh acidity that gives energy and drinkability. Despite its approachable style, there is underlying structure and depth, characteristic of Moulin-à-Vent.
A versatile and characterful red, this wine pairs easily with charcuterie, roasted meats or hearty vegetable dishes. Enjoyable in its youth for its freshness and vibrancy, it also reflects the potential of Moulin-à-Vent to produce wines of both personality and subtle structure, even in a natural style.
