Description
Les Romains 2022 from Domaine Fouassier is a benchmark single-parcel Sancerre Blanc, drawn from one of the estate’s most prized vineyard sites. The Fouassier family, long-time biodynamic pioneers in Sancerre, work this 3-hectare plot with meticulous care, aiming to express the pure identity of its flint- and clay-rich soils. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc that is both deeply rooted in terroir and highly expressive in the glass.
The vineyard’s old vines (around 40–45 years on average) naturally limit yields, producing fruit with notable concentration and depth. Combined with biodynamic farming and gentle cellar work, this gives the wine its distinctive balance of intensity and finesse.
On the nose, Les Romains 2022 is vivid and layered, opening with citrus zest, grapefruit, and ripe lemon, followed by white peach, pear, and subtle floral notes. Beneath the fruit, there is a clear flinty, almost smoky minerality that reflects the silex-rich soils of the site, giving the wine its signature aromatic tension.
On the palate, the wine is both ample and precise. The 2022 vintage brings a touch of natural richness, with ripe orchard fruit and a gentle honeyed nuance, but this is always counterbalanced by a firm, saline acidity. The texture is slightly more generous than classic linear Sancerre, yet it remains focused and energetic, carrying flavours of citrus, stone fruit, and chalky minerality through a long, structured finish.
There is a subtle interplay here between power and restraint: a wine that feels complete and expressive in its youth but also built on serious underlying structure. The finish is persistent, slightly saline, and mineral-driven, leaving a clear impression of terroir.
Les Romains 2022 is a gastronomic Sancerre, ideally suited to oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, or creamy poultry dishes. It can be enjoyed now for its vibrancy, but will also gain additional complexity over the next few years as its texture and mineral nuances deepen.
