Description
“Vieilles Canailles” 2023 is one of the most distinctive and limited cuvées from Domaine Les Eminades, produced in the Saint-Chinian appellation. Founded in 2002 by Patricia and Luc Bettoni, the estate is renowned for its organic and biodynamic philosophy, working with great precision to reveal the character of old vines and exceptional terroirs.
This cuvée is built around 95% Carignan from remarkable vines planted in 1902, complemented by a small proportion of Mourvèdre. Grown on clay-limestone soils at an average altitude of 250 metres, these old vines produce extremely low yields—around 15 hl/ha—resulting in exceptional concentration and depth. All vineyard work is carried out manually, “à dos d’homme,” without synthetic products, and the vines are trained in traditional gobelet pruning. Harvesting is done by hand in small crates, with meticulous sorting.
In the cellar, the approach is equally respectful: the wine is vinified traditionally using 100% whole bunches, allowing for a unique aromatic profile and refined tannic structure. It is then aged for 20 months in large oak demi-muids (500–600L), a slow élevage that enhances complexity while preserving the identity of the fruit. Production is extremely limited, with only around 2,300 bottles made.
The 2023 vintage offers a deep and captivating nose, with aromas of black cherry, blackberry and plum, intertwined with notes of dried herbs, pepper, liquorice and a distinctive earthy, almost wild character. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet finely balanced, with structured but elegant tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, persistent finish marked by spice and minerality.
“Vieilles Canailles” is a profound, contemplative wine, ideal with slow-cooked meats, game, or rich Mediterranean dishes. Best served around 17°C, it has excellent ageing potential of 8 to 10 years, during which it will gain further nuance and complexity.
