Description

Domaine Fouassier is one of the historic reference points of Sancerre, with a family presence spanning over ten generations on the famed limestone hill of the appellation. Today led by cousins Benoît and Paul Fouassier, the estate covers around 60 hectares and is a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in the Loire Valley, holding both Biodyvin and Demeter certifications. Their philosophy centres on expressing the diversity of Sancerre’s soils—chalk, flint and clay—through precise, parcel-focused winemaking, with minimal intervention and a clear emphasis on purity and balance.

While Sancerre is best known for Sauvignon Blanc, the appellation also produces a small but distinctive amount of red wine from Pinot Noir. The 2022 Sancerre Rouge from Domaine Fouassier comes from vines averaging 35 to 55 years of age, planted predominantly on chalky soils with a small proportion of clay and flint. This terroir brings both structure and a marked mineral backbone, giving the wine a profile that is at once elegant and quietly powerful.

The vineyard work is meticulous and fully organic and biodynamic, with low yields (around 35 hl/ha) to enhance concentration. Harvesting is done by hand, followed by careful sorting to preserve fruit quality. In the cellar, vinification is natural, using indigenous yeasts, with a cold pre-fermentation maceration and gentle extraction. Fermentation lasts several weeks, after which the wine is aged for around 12 months in oak vessels, before being bottled without filtration—maintaining clarity of expression and texture.

In the glass, the 2022 shows a deep ruby colour and an expressive aromatic profile, combining ripe black fruits with subtle earthy and forest-floor nuances. The palate is concentrated yet balanced, with fine tannins supporting a core of fruit and a fresh, mineral-driven backbone. There is a natural harmony between structure and elegance, characteristic of well-crafted Pinot Noir from Sancerre.

A versatile and gastronomic red, it pairs effortlessly with roasted or braised meats, game dishes and aged cheeses. Both approachable in its youth and capable of short- to mid-term ageing, this cuvée offers a compelling expression of Pinot Noir beyond its more famous Burgundian counterparts—defined by freshness, subtle power and a strong sense of place.
