Description
Château Lamartine Cuvée Particulière 2020 is a classic expression of Cahors, the historic “black wine” region of Southwest France, where Malbec reaches a particularly dark, structured, and age-worthy style. Produced from old vines grown on clay-limestone and gravelly terraces of the Lot Valley, this cuvée reflects both concentration and finesse, with low yields enhancing depth and intensity.
The blend is predominantly Malbec with a small proportion of Tannat, which contributes additional structure and longevity. On the nose, the wine is deeply aromatic and complex, opening with blackcurrant, blackberry, and ripe plum, followed by violet, liquorice, and subtle spice. As it develops, more savoury notes emerge—graphite, dark chocolate, and a touch of earthy, smoky complexity.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, with a dense core of dark fruit framed by firm yet polished tannins. There is a real sense of structure here, but also balance: the fruit remains vibrant and juicy, supported by a fresh backbone of acidity that prevents the wine from feeling heavy. Oak ageing adds subtle layers of spice, vanilla, and toast without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
The finish is long and slightly savoury, marked by black fruit, mineral tension, and lingering spice. In 2020, Lamartine has produced a wine that is both powerful and controlled, offering immediate appeal with decanting but also strong ageing potential over the next 8–15 years. It pairs beautifully with duck, lamb, game, grilled meats, and richly flavoured dishes.
A serious and characterful Cahors that shows why Malbec from this region remains one of France’s most distinctive and age-worthy red wine expressions.
