Description
Domaine Rossignol is a traditional estate in the Côte de Beaune, producing wines that emphasise balance, finesse and a faithful expression of Burgundy’s terroirs. With a measured approach in both vineyard and cellar, the domaine crafts Pinot Noir that highlights purity of fruit and elegance, staying true to the classical identity of its appellations.
The Volnay 1er Cru “Clos des Angles” 2018 comes from a well-regarded Premier Cru climat located on the border between Volnay and Pommard. This site is known for producing wines that bridge the stylistic gap between the two villages—retaining the perfume and finesse of Volnay while incorporating a touch more structure and depth. The 2018 vintage, marked by warmth and generosity, lends the wine a ripe and expressive character.
The vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soils, which provide both structure and balance, while the exposure ensures consistent ripening. In this terroir, Pinot Noir develops both aromatic lift and a more grounded, slightly firmer backbone compared to village-level Volnay. Domaine Rossignol’s interpretation focuses on maintaining this balance, avoiding excess extraction while preserving the richness of the vintage.
Vinification is carried out in a traditional Burgundian style, with careful fermentation and gentle extraction to retain finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a moderate use of new oak to enhance structure and complexity without dominating the fruit. This élevage allows the wine to integrate and develop texture while maintaining clarity.
In the glass, the 2018 reveals a deep ruby colour and an expressive bouquet of ripe cherry, raspberry and plum, layered with floral notes of violet and hints of spice and light earth. The palate is generous and rounded, with silky tannins and a slightly richer texture than classic Volnay, balanced by a fresh acidity that brings lift and definition. The finish is long, smooth and subtly structured, reflecting both the Premier Cru status and the warmth of the vintage.
A compelling and versatile Burgundy, “Clos des Angles” 2018 is approachable now yet capable of further development over the coming years. It pairs beautifully with roast meats, duck or earthy dishes, offering a nuanced expression of Volnay with added depth and dimension.
